Since the 21st century, the fermentation industry has been burgeoning in China. As one of the earliest companies to introduce fermentation technology, Coway has closely collaborated with scientific research institutions, laboratories, and engineering companies in more than 10 countries. This collaboration has facilitated the introduction of numerous projects in various fields such as vitamin production, antibiotic development, and bio-pesticide innovation to domestic companies.

Initial Challenges and Needs

In the early 2000s, Chinese companies in the fermentation sector faced significant challenges in adopting advanced fermentation technologies. The main issues included a lack of localized expertise, insufficient technical infrastructure, and the need for customized solutions to fit local industrial requirements. Coway identified these gaps and sought to bridge them by leveraging international partnerships and technological transfer.

Establishment of Cowaybio Laboratories

In 2011, Coway established the Cowaybio Laboratories platform based on fermentation and bioconversion to facilitate the localization and commercialization of international technology transfer. The platform comprises experienced R&D experts and industry leaders who provide demonstration, training, and technical assistance at lab, pilot, and industrial scales. This initiative aimed to build local capacity and enable Chinese companies to adopt and innovate using cutting-edge fermentation technologies.

Synthetic Biology

In recent years, Coway has shifted its focus to synthetic biology, recognized as the third biological science revolution. This technology holds potential applications in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, agriculture, beauty care, healthcare, food, and environmental protection. Cowaybio has ventured into healthcare projects involving HMOS, lactoferrin, carotenoids, nucleoside sugars, and beauty projects such as ectoine, ergothioneine (EGT), and squalene.
