Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK) is a probiotic bacterium that naturally lives in the large intestine and protects and strengthens the intestinal lining. It makes up 3%-5% of the gut microbiota in healthy people and is essential for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. Although AKK constitutes only 3%-5% of the gut microbiota, its abundance is negatively correlated with risks of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity, type 2 diabetes, and positively correlated with the efficacy of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in cancer immunotherapy, earning it the titles of “Longevity bacterium” and “Lean bacterium.
