The Future Technology Development Conference of China's Coatings Industry held in Suzhou
In order to promote the collaborative research of key core technologies related to coatings, promote the integrated development of scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation, accelerate the "artificial intelligence +" action of the coatings industry, and deepen the exchange among industry, academia, and research institutes, the 2025 Future Technology Development Conference of China's Coatings Industry was held in Suzhou from June 24th to 26th. Nearly 300 representatives from national ministries and commissions and about 200 well-known universities, research institutes and upstream and downstream coating companies across the country gathered together.

Professor Liang from Tsinghua University was invited to participate in this conference and give a keynote speech. The report introduced the development technology of functional coatings based on Janus particles. The report pointed out that the chemical composition and functional zoning design of Janus materials, macroscopic morphology and microstructure regulation, and research progress in mass preparation of materials were introduced. This technology designed and synthesized organic-inorganic composite Janus materials, integrating organic "soft" and inorganic "hard" components into partitions, so that they can self-organize orientation at the interface and regulate the aggregation structure with other components, realizing the special stratification and micro-nanostructure design of coatings. Using amphiphilic Janus particles as waterborne coating additives, the spatial distribution of different functional components of the coating is adjusted by utilizing its interface self-orientation and self-stratification characteristics, and ultra-thin single-particle coatings and self-stratified coatings are constructed to give the coatings super-hydrophobic, lubricating, wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, environmentally responsive and other functions. The team is also working on the development of functional microcapsule self-stratified coatings, which can realize the preparation of marine anti-corrosion and anti-fouling self-stratified coatings; self-lubricating, self-repairing, temperature-controlled multifunctional self-stratified coatings, etc. By improving the synthesis method of Janus particles, the team can achieve precise control of particle size, shape and surface properties to improve its performance and stability in specific applications.

Coway International, as a platform initiated by Tsinghua University in 2002 to focus on international technology transfer, is actively promoting the industrialization of this technology in the field of coatings.
About JANUS particles
Janus particles are a special type of nanoparticles, whose name comes from Janus, the two-faced god in Roman mythology, symbolizing contradiction and duality. Its surface is composed of two or more components with different physical properties. This asymmetric structure allows different or even incompatible physical, chemical and mechanical properties to be combined in one particle.
In 1992, de Gennes predicted in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech that Janus particles, like amphiphilic molecules, can self-assemble at the liquid/liquid interface and have a clear direction, which aroused the research boom of Janus particles. Janus materials play an important role in promoting the development of new materials. Janus particles have amphiphilic properties, can self-organize and orient at the surface/interface, and can form a specific aggregation structure in the matrix. Based on this feature, Janus particles are expected to provide new building blocks for the design of functional coatings.
