Success Is Built on Sustained Accumulation

Success is built on sustained accumulation”, for Tan Hongxin, general manager of Coway International TechTrans Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Coway"), who has been dedicated to global technology transfer for 30 years, he chose to use this word to summarize the past three years.

Undoubtedly, Dr. Tan and his team have faced monumental challenges. For a company that depends on international collaboration, pandemic-induced barriers meant lost opportunities. “In-person meetings with global partners have become unfeasible, however, fostering trust and addressing challenges in technology transfer frequently necessitate face-to-face interactions.” Dr. Tan reflects.

The company was founded in June 2001, formerly known as the "Tsinghua University International Technology Transfer Center" specially established by Tsinghua University, the main content is to carry out international technology transfer, to organize foreign technical resources for docking domestic industry. At that time, the original intention of the establishment was to respond to the severe challenges of global economic integration and the internationalization of science and technology, and actively use international resources to carry out more extensive scientific and technological cooperation at home and abroad.

In June 2002, in order to carry out the international technology transfer of Tsinghua University more effectively, Tsinghua University initiated the establishment of "Coway International TechTrans Co., Ltd.", and entrusted Coway to carry out the commercial operation of Tsinghua University international technology transfer Center. Coway actively serves for economic development, and through multi-level, multi-form and multi-channel scientific and technological cooperation, it has become a powerful supporting platform for Tsinghua University to serve the society and national development strategy.

From today's point of view, the years when Coway was born from Tsinghua University were the honeymoon period of globalization, people believed that the earth would become a village, and the transfer of resources would increasingly become no national boundaries, only following the choices of the market. That is also the beginning of Chinese enterprises to truly embrace the world, more and more entrepreneurs and scholars began to see the power of technology, but also see the commercialization of technology, will create a huge energy in the process of economic development.

Looking back today, Dr. Tan still has a deep memory of inclusion and support from all sides in those years. Whether he was brought back to Tsinghua University by talents from state-owned enterprises, or established Coway with the support of leaders from all parties, or even landed a number of international cooperation projects later, each step of which meant that someone summoned the courage to break the shackles of the old mechanism in order to explore more innovation space for technology transfer.

But even so, Dr. Tan believes that the past three years cannot be counted as a "loss", but a process of re-combing the internal. "It's been a lot for three years. But I would say that to some extent the past three years have provided an opportunity to do more domestic business, sort out the resources at hand, and start to have time to reflect on our team capacity building."

In the past three years, Dr. Tan said, they basically went to all the cities in China. "The situation of domestic enterprises is thoroughly understood, and the situation of technology transfer for export has been opened. Even if the COVID-19 prevention and control does not change, we will still have a harvest year in 2023."
